Pine Castle

The poet and writer Will Wallace Harney gave the Pine Castle area its name In 1874. “My Castle of Pine” or “Pine Castle” is derived from the building of Harney’s home, which contained castle-like towers built from pine boards. Today, Pine Castle residents and businesses contribute to Orange County’s thriving economy while remembering their proud history.

The Pine Castle area encompasses Orlando’s first integrated subdivision, Sky Lake; and events such as the annual Pine Castle Pioneer Days honor the pioneering residents and their traditions. From the early settlers to the urban residents of the 21st Century, the people of Pine Castle remain involved and concerned about their community.

Pine Castle includes the areas bound to the West by Orange Blossom Trail, to the East by Belle Isle City, to the North Redman Street and the City of Edgewood, and to the South by Sand Lake Road.

Pine Castle District Review Group Meetings

This past October, Orange County Commissioner Pete Clarke and the Planning Division staff kicked off a series of Review Group meetings focused on revitalizing the Pine Castle District. The Review Group, consisting of residents and business owners within the district, are working with staff on three key items that will help achieve Pine Castle’s vision of a more walkable, vibrant, and prosperous district. These items include:

  1. An update to the county’s Comprehensive Plan and Future Land Use Map
  2. An update to the county’s Land Development Code
  3. An Infrastructure Plan addressing phasing and financing for priority projects in the district

Previous studies addressing Transit Oriented Development around the SunRail station and infill and redevelopment along the South Orange Avenue corridor (from Sand Lake Road to Hoffner Avenue) will help guide the Review Group’s efforts.

Residents and business owners in Pine Castle are encouraged to attend upcoming meetings on February 17 and March 17. All meetings will be held from 9-11am at the Pine Castle Woman’s Club at 5901 S. Orange Avenue, Orlando, FL 32809.

At February’s Pine Castle community meeting staff from the Orange County Planning Division gave an update on the progress meetings. The presentation can be accessed here- Pine Castle District Review Presentation
